Chihiro – Scenes of Children Playing

"When I draw children, I feel as if I am drawing scenes from my own childhood" (1971)
Children rushing about full of energy, a young girl engrossed in drawing a picture...The life-long theme of Chihiro Iwasaki's illustrations was "Children" and she left us a large number of artworks that depict children playing happily. For each of the children in her pictures, Chihiro tells a story. For example, "...this child is three years old, and because she is still small, cannot yet play the castanets with one hand..." Chihiro's drawings reveal the personality of each of the children that are portrayed and each child is shown having fun playing in their own way. Chihiro's drawings make us recollect the old, familiar play scenes of our own childhood. At this exhibition, artworks such as the picture book, Will you be my friend? will be shown in addition to pictures of toddlers and children. By viewing these works, we can reflect on the importance of play time, which is so precious for children and cannot be replaced.
